Fear

I have been thinking more recently about fear.  I don’t mean this in a writing sense, but in a personal sense – what am I afraid of, and why?  And while that alone could fill up an entry (or three), it’s not what I want to talk about in this entry.  I want this one short and sweet.

I collect quotes, and eight or nine years ago (ish – my estimates of time are on the loose side), I came across this one, that I want to share with you guys.  It relates, and it is by one Steve Jobs.  (You guys know I am no huge Apple fan, and having collected this before his death, I think it has more meaning now).

“Almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.” ~Steve Jobs

I could say a lot on that, but I couldn’t say it better.  This is what I have to remind myself:  I have nothing to lose.  I don’t get to take anything with me when I go, and I get no do-overs.  One life, and this is it.

In as much as fear holds us back from life, it is a preview of death.  And I mean to live.
